How to Obtain a Private Prescription
Private prescriptions are available following a consultation with one of our experienced GPs. Whether you need a routine GP appointment or urgent appointments, your doctor will discuss your symptoms, medical history, current medications and any relevant investigations before deciding whether medication is the most appropriate treatment, and urgent cases can often be seen the same day or next day.

Electronic Prescription Service & Paper Prescriptions
Where possible, we use an electronic prescription service, making this prescription service a quick and convenient way to obtain your medication from your preferred pharmacy. If required, we can also provide a paper private prescription.
Private prescriptions can be fulfilled at any standard pharmacy, and where the pharmacy offers it, medication can be delivered directly. This can also mean faster access to treatment than waiting for NHS prescribing routes.
Our team will advise you on the most suitable option based on your prescription and chosen pharmacy.
Repeat Prescription Requests
If you are receiving ongoing treatment under the care of The Doctors Practice, we can provide repeat prescriptions where it is safe and appropriate to do so. Any repeat prescription request is reviewed by the practice and is not automatically transferred to NHS GP services, as NHS GPs are not obliged to take over private prescriptions under shared care agreements.
To ensure your medication continues to be effective and safe, some medicines require regular reviews or monitoring. Private repeat prescriptions may not automatically update NHS records, so please tell your usual GP when relevant. If a review is needed before your next prescription can be issued, we will let you know and arrange an appointment with one of our doctors.

Every prescription issued by The Doctors Practice is based on a careful clinical assessment and our doctors’ expertise. Alongside prescribing, we can assess general health concerns, urgent care needs, and broader overall health where relevant to treatment decisions. We prescribe in accordance with current medical guidelines and only recommend medication when it is in your best interests.
Your consultation will include consideration of:

Medication Costs
The cost of issuing a prescription is included within your consultation where a prescription is clinically required, so the consultation fee covers the private GP assessment and prescribing decision, while medication costs are separate.
Please note that you pay the full cost of private medication, plus any pharmacy dispensing fee, when your prescription is dispensed. Unlike the NHS fixed prescription charge, private prescription pricing is not fixed and can vary between medicines and pharmacies. No medication is provided free, and costs may vary depending on the medication prescribed and the dispensing pharmacy.
If you require ongoing repeat prescriptions outside of a consultation, any applicable administrative charges will be explained to you in advance.

After an online consultation, a private GP in Birmingham can issue private prescriptions when clinically appropriate.
