Reverse Sun Damaged Skin

With Dr Rinku Ratti

Sun damage often develops gradually over many years, which means effective treatment requires a structured, long-term approach. During your initial consultation, Dr Rinku will assess your skin in detail, identify the type and depth of pigmentation present, and help choose the right treatment based on your skin type and desired results to determine the most effective treatment.

From this, she will create a bespoke treatment plan, as age spot treatments often work best as a combination approach and may need maintenance over time, focused not only on improving existing damage but also preventing further pigmentation from developing. Our philosophy is centred on restoring skin health, improving resilience and achieving natural-looking, even-toned skin.

Throughout your journey, you’ll receive expert guidance, ongoing support and tailored skincare recommendations to help protect and rejuvenate your skin over time.

Sun Damage and Age Spots

Sun Damage Treatments at our Clinic

At The Doctors Practice, we use a combination of advanced aesthetic treatments to effectively target sun damage, pigmentation and uneven skin texture.

Chemical Peels

Medical-grade chemical peels exfoliate damaged skin cells and stimulate controlled skin renewal. They remove dead skin cells, encourage the growth of new skin cells and new skin, and help improve skin tone while fading age spots and reducing pigmentation for a brighter complexion. Peels are one targeted treatment option, and dermabrasion is another resurfacing approach that sands down the surface layer of skin.

Skin Boosters

Skin boosters are injectable treatments designed to deeply hydrate and improve the overall quality of the skin. For acne-prone individuals, skin boosters can help restore balance to skin that has become dehydrated, irritated, or compromised by breakouts

Microneedling

Microneedling stimulates the skin’s natural collagen and elastin production, encouraging cell turnover and regeneration. Over time, this helps reduce pigmentation, smooth uneven texture and improve the overall appearance of sun-damaged skin.

Medical Grade Skincare

Ongoing skincare is essential for both treating and preventing sun damage. Dr Rinku will prescribe carefully selected medical-grade skincare products designed to reduce pigmentation, support skin renewal and protect against further UV-related damage, with prescribed topical actives to treat age spots including retinoid creams and, where appropriate, short-term hydroquinone to inhibit pigment production, sometimes combined with retinoids; for stubborn pigmentation, combining prescribed skincare with treatments is often the most effective approach.

Additional Information About Skin Damage

Sun damage refers to the cumulative effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the skin over time. Even short periods of unprotected sun exposure can trigger melanin pigment production, and over time excess UV light can cause skin to develop age spots.

UV rays accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin, leading to premature ageing, while also triggering excess melanin production, which results in dark spots and uneven pigmentation.

Although sun damage is extremely common, it can be effectively treated and improved with the right combination of professional treatments and preventative skincare, depending on the type of pigmentation present.

Skin Damage Causes

Sun damage develops when the skin is repeatedly exposed to ultraviolet radiation without adequate protection. Over time, this exposure leads to both structural and pigmentary changes in the skin, and prolonged sun exposure increases the risk of age spots.

Common contributing factors include:

  • Prolonged sun exposure without SPF
  • History of sunburn
  • Tanning (sunbeds or natural sun exposure)
  • Outdoor lifestyle or occupational exposure
  • Ageing and reduced skin repair function
  • Lack of consistent sun protection
  • Genetic predisposition to pigmentation

Age spots, also known as solar lentigines, are a direct result of long-term UV exposure and are more common after middle age, especially in people over 40, though younger people can also develop them if younger people spend significant time in the sun.

Skin Damage Signs and Symptoms

Sun-damaged skin can present in several ways, often becoming more noticeable over time.

Common signs include:

  • Flat patches that may appear light brown or darker on the skin (age spots)
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Freckles that become darker or more widespread
  • Dull or tired-looking complexion
  • Rough or uneven skin texture
  • Fine lines and premature wrinkles
  • Loss of skin elasticity
  • Enlarged pores

These changes are most commonly seen on sun-exposed areas, such as the hands, face, neck, and chest.

Preventing Further Damage

Prevention is essential in maintaining healthy, even-toned skin after treatment.

Daily use of broad spectrum sunscreen with broad-spectrum SPF 30+ is the most important step in protecting the skin from further UV damage and helping prevent future age spots; additional measures such as limiting sun exposure during peak hours, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding tanning beds can further reduce the risk of new pigmentation developing.

Dr Rinku will provide personalised advice on how to protect your skin and maintain long-term results following treatment.

Skin Damage FAQs

Sun damage can be significantly improved with professional treatments, although prevention is essential to avoid further damage. Many patients see a noticeable improvement in pigmentation and skin texture.

The best treatment depends on skin type, pigment depth, and desired results. Options may include chemical peels, medical-grade skincare, laser treatments, intense pulsed light treatments, or cryotherapy, which uses extreme cold to lighten age spots.

Results vary depending on the extent of damage, but many patients begin to see improvement within several weeks, depending on the treatment used and the severity of sun damage, with continued progress over a treatment course. New spots should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Age spots are generally harmless, but any new or changing pigmentation should always be assessed by a dermatologist or other qualified medical professional to rule out other conditions, since not all marks are benign lentigos or simple liver spots.

Yes. UV exposure breaks down collagen and elastin, which can lead to premature wrinkles, fine lines and loss of skin firmness.

Most treatments are well tolerated with minimal discomfort. Some treatments can cause temporary redness, which usually settles quickly. Any sensations experienced will be fully explained before treatment.

Yes. Consistent use of SPF, sun protection and medical-grade skincare can significantly reduce the likelihood of new age spots forming.

Yes. Treatments are carefully tailored to suit different skin types and pigmentation levels, and consideration for skin type is important when treating age spots. During your consultation, we assess the appropriate use of each treatment based on your skin type, pigmentation level, and goals.
