Acne Treatments at our Clinic

At The Doctors Practice, our acne treatment in Birmingham covers a full range of treatment options. Acne treatments include skincare products, prescription medications, and specialist clinic procedures – and we advise and prescribe based on your individual assessment.

Chemical Peels

Professional exfoliation to improve skin texture and reduce breakouts. Chemical peels accelerate cell turnover and exfoliate the skin. Some deep peels are recommended for treating severe acne at our Birmingham clinic.

Cold Atmospheric Plasma

Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP) Therapy is an innovative, non-invasive treatment that targets acne-causing bacteria while helping to reduce inflammation and promote skin healing.

Skin Boosters

Skin boosters are injectable treatments designed to deeply hydrate and improve the overall quality of the skin. For acne-prone individuals, skin boosters can help restore balance to skin that has become dehydrated, irritated, or compromised by breakouts

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy is a customised treatment that delivers a blend of vitamins, antioxidants, amino acids, and other active ingredients directly into the skin through a series of micro-injections.

LED Light Therapy

Advanced LED treatments targeting acne bacteria and inflammation. Microneedling and Light Therapy are used to heal active breakouts.

Custom Skincare

Prescription-strength treatments using vitamin A derivatives for cellular renewal and pore clearing. Using vitamin A can help reduce inflammation in acne.

Acne and Acne Scar

Dr Rinku Ratti is a very sweet and patient individual. I went in for my first chemical peel and CAP treatment, feeling a bit anxious. She calmed me down and talked me through it, and it was honestly such a fun and peaceful experience. I would definitely recommend her. Her work is clean, precise and she has a great standard of care, I am very grateful!

Acne and Acne Scar

For the past couple of years, I struggled badly with eczema and TSW, and after exhausting so many different options, I came across the treatments and practices offered by The Doctors Practice. At my lowest point, I felt constantly exhausted, uncomfortable, and had completely lost my confidence. From the moment I started working with Dr Rinku, she made me feel genuinely understood and comfortable, which immediately made the whole process feel less overwhelming.

Additional Information About Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria, leading to the development of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and, in some cases, painful cysts. It most commonly affects the face, chest, shoulders, and back, and can occur in people of all ages, although it is especially common during adolescence due to hormonal changes.

Acne Causes

  • Excess Oil Production: Sebaceous glands produce too much sebum, which clogs pores and creates an environment for breakouts. Excess oil production can clog pores and cause acne, especially during hormonal fluctuations.
  • Dead Skin Cell Buildup: Poor skin cell turnover leads to blocked hair follicles. When dead skin cells are not shed properly, they combine with oil to form plugs within the pore.
  • Bacterial Infection: Certain bacteria under the skin contribute to acne formation. The bacterium Cutibacterium acnes (formerly P. acnes) multiplies in clogged pores, triggering inflammation. Oral antibiotics reduce P. acnes bacteria in acne patients as part of a wider treatment approach.
  • Hormonal Changes: Fluctuating hormones during puberty, menstruation, and pregnancy trigger breakouts. Hormonal therapies help regulate acne flare-ups in female patients.
  • Genetic Factors: Genetics can play a role in acne development. A family history of acne increases your likelihood of developing the condition.
  • Environmental Triggers: Stress, diet (particularly dairy and sugar), and certain cosmetics or make up can worsen acne symptoms. Avoiding dairy and sugar can help reduce acne triggers.

Acne Signs and Symptoms

  • Blackheads and Whiteheads: Comedonal acne includes blackheads (open comedones) and whiteheads (closed comedones), indicating clogged pores.
  • Red, Inflamed Spots: Inflammatory acne features red spots and pustules, showing bacterial infection and inflammation beneath the skin.
  • Deep Cysts and Nodules: Severe acne can lead to nodules and cysts – painful, deep skin lesions that carry a high risk of permanent scarring.
  • Acne Conglobata: Acne conglobata is a severe form of acne with interconnected lesions, requiring urgent specialist treatment.
  • Acne Rosacea: Acne rosacea causes redness and visible blood vessels on the face, and is often confused with traditional acne but requires a different treatment approach.
  • Acne Mechanica: Acne mechanica results from friction or pressure on the skin, often from sports equipment, masks, or tight clothing.
  • Skin Texture Changes: Rough, uneven skin surface due to ongoing active acne or developing acne scarring.
