What is Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW)?

Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW) is a complex skin condition that can occur after stopping prolonged use of topical corticosteroids, commonly prescribed for conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. The medical term ‘topical steroid withdrawal’ refers to the range of symptoms and skin reactions that may develop when topical steroids are discontinued, especially after long-term use.

Over time, the skin can become dependent on steroid cream. When steroid creams are discontinued, patients may experience severe rebound symptoms that can significantly impact daily life.

TSW is becoming increasingly common as awareness of the condition grows, and understanding the difference between TSW and eczema can help patients and clinicians make safer decisions about steroid use.

I am going in to my 4th year of riding the nightmare rollercoaster that is TSW, completely unsupported by the NHS, as any Doctors I have previously spoken with refused to accept it as a diagnosis. Supporting this with skin products which were ordered and delivered to my home address within 48 hours. As the cumulative effects of the treatments were so positive, I returned a day later to repeat the same treatments and hope to do so again soon. I genuinely wish I could give this practice more than 5 stars! From start to finish, I cannot fault the service I received. Everyone was incredibly welcoming, friendly, professional and, most importantly, completely judgment-free. They made what can sometimes be an awkward or anxiety-inducing experience feel so easy and comfortable. Even my blood test, which was a little awkward because apparently my veins decided to completely disappear (which can sometimes happen) was handled with so much patience and reassurance. I genuinely felt really well looked after throughout the whole process. And the results came back quicker than I could have imagined. I was honestly so impressed with how efficient the entire service was. It is so refreshing to find a practice where you feel genuinely listened to, respected and comfortable asking questions without feeling embarrassed or judged. The staff were absolutely lovely and the whole experience was fantastic from beginning to end. I would 100% recommend this practice to anybody and everybody. If you’re considering using them, do it! I will absolutely be going back again in the future.

We had such a positive experience with Dr Rinku today. We are travelling from overseas and our daughter became unwell, so we were anxious about finding medical care quickly.
